Peter Cryle

Biography

Peter Cryle completed his MA at the University of Queensland before undertaking a doctorate at the University of Nice (France). He joined the Department of French at UQ in 1973, as a teacher and researcher specialising in modern French literature. In 2002, he was appointed as founding Director of the Centre for the History of European Discourses, a position from which he retired in October 2011. He has held a series of Discovery grants funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), and has in recent years co-edited, with various colleagues a number of books and journal issues bringing together papers produced in conferences organised by the Centre. His books include ‘The Thematics of Commitment’ (Princeton, 1985), ‘Geometry in the Boudoir’ (Cornell, 1992), ‘The Telling of the Act’ (Delaware, 2002) and with Alison Moore, ‘Frigidity: An Intellectual History’ (Palgrave, 2011). He is currently engaged with Elizabeth Stephens in a project funded by the ARC entitled “A Critical Genealogy of Normality€.
