Frederik Vervaet

Biography

Frederik Juliaan Vervaet is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Melbourne. He received his PhD from Ghent University as Research Fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (2002) and was Francqui Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation at the University of California, Berkeley (2002/2003), Visiting Scholar at Wolfson College, Oxford (Hilary 2006), Visiting Fellow of the Belgian Historical Institute in Rome at the Academia Belgica (fall 2010), Member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (term 1, 2018), Visiting Professor at the University of Toulouse -Jean Jaurès (fall 2019), and will be a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge (Michaelmas 2023).

He has published widely in Roman social, institutional and political history, and Roman public law, including a monograph awarded with the University of Melbourne’s Woodward Medal in Humanities and Social Sciences (2017) and chapters in the Oxford Handbook of Roman Law and Society and the Second Edition of the Oxford History of the Roman World.

I am a native speaker of Flemish (Belgian Netherlandish) and am also fluent in French and German and am able to read Italian and Spanish. Professionally, I also engage regularly with Latin and Ancient Greek.
