Stewart King

Biography

Stewart King is an internationally renowned scholar in the fields of Spanish and Catalan literary studies, and he pioneered the field of world crime fiction studies. He earned his PhD in Spanish and Catalan Studies from La Trobe University in 2000 and he was appointed to an ongoing position at Monash University in 2001. He was twice elected President of the Association of Iberian and Latin American Studies of Australasia (2016-2020).

His first monograph, Escribir la catalanidad. Lengua e identidades culturales en la narrativa contemporanea de Cataluña [Writing Catalanness: Language and Cultural Identities in Contemporary Narrative from Catalonia] (Tamesis, 2005), presents a controversial re-evaluation of Catalan authors who write in Spanish that challenges the disciplinary and identitarian limits of Catalan Studies. His second monograph, Murder in the Multinational State (Routledge, 2019), analyses crime fiction in Basque, Catalan, Galician and Castilian (Spanish) to show how the genre’s conventions shape both the production of national and cultural identities and their disruption. His pioneering work on world crime fiction redefines crime fiction as a global genre rather than a collection of different national traditions. In this field, he has co-edited Criminal Moves: Modes of Mobility in Crime Fiction (Liverpool University Press, 2019), The Routledge Companion to Crime Fiction (2020) and The Cambridge Companion to World Crime Fiction (forthcoming). He is currently working on a monograph on world crime fiction.

Stewart King publishes in English, Spanish and Catalan and his work has been translated into Polish and Basque.
