Biography

Since January 2005 Glenn Summerhayes has held the Chair in Anthropology at the University of Otago. Prior to that he was Head of Archaeology & Natural History at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, ANU. Summerhayes has been actively involved in Papua New Guinea archaeology for over 35 years making significant contributions to that nation’s past. Summerhayes has been involved in a number of projects with colleagues from both PNG and Australian institutions, and is an Honorary Professor at both the ANU and the University of Queensland. For his significant contribution to the archaeology of New Guinea he was conferred as an Officer of the Order of Logohu (OL) in the 2014 New Year Honours listing. In 2021, he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his contribution to tertiary education and history.
