Biography

Djon Mundine’s arts leadership has communicated the richness of Aboriginal culture to Australia and the world. Beginning with The Aboriginal Memorial (1988) installation at the National Gallery of Australia, which remains a unique and resonant statement of Indigenous commemoration, his practice as a curator, writer and artist continues to inform public debates about Aboriginal art, culture and history. His exceptional achievements throughout his career are demonstrated by a series of prestigious awards, including the Order of Australia Medal for services to the visual arts (1995), his many public service roles within arts and ATSI organisations, and many national and international invitations to represent Aboriginal arts in public lectures and addresses. Djon combines these high profile public roles with a commitment to supporting and mentoring arts and culture within Aboriginal communities across the country, including within prisons.
