Biography

Professor Hans Pols is a historian of science and medicine in Indonesia and a leading international scholar of the development of psychiatry and mental health. His research focuses on the history of psychiatry and mental health in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. He is currently involved in a research project on the recent history of community mental health in Australia. In his historical research on the Dutch East Indies, he has paid meticulous attention to the agency and authorship of local agents (in particular Indonesian physicians and medical students) who took up and creatively adapted European science and medicine during the colonial era. He recently expanded his research interests to include recent developments in mental health, in particular in Indonesia, and regularly contributes to discussions on the future of mental health services there.
