Biography

Frank Bongiorno is Professor of History at the Australian National University, and has been Head of the School of History since July 2018. Educated at the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University, he is a scholar of Australia, whose work has explored political, labour and cultural histories.

His books include studies of labour politics, of the history of sexuality, and of the 1980s. He has previously held academic appointments at Griffith University, the University of New England and King’s College London, and in the late 1990s was an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian University and Smuts Visiting Fellow in Commonwealth Studies at the University of Cambridge. He has been a co-editor of History Australia, the Australian Historical Association’s journal, and has served as chair of the Literature and History Committee of the New South Wales Ministry of the Arts. He has also advised the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority on the Victorian Certificate of Education Australian History curriculum.

He is a regular contributor to the media,  was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2019, and made the president of the Australian Historical Society in July 2022.
