Biography
Terry Flew is Professor of Digital Communication and Culture at The University of Sydney. He commenced this position in April 2021, having previously been a Professor of Communication and Creative Industries at the Queensland University of Technology. He is the author of 13 books (four edited), including Understanding Global Media (2018); Politics, Media and Democracy in Australia (2017); Media Economics (2015); Global Creative Industries (2013); New Media: An Introduction (2014); and Creative Industries, Culture and Policy (2012). His work has been translated into Chinese, Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Polish languages. His new book, Regulating Platforms, will be published by Polity in late 2021.
He has been the President of the International Communications Association (ICA) during 2019-20, and organised the ICA Annual Conference in Washington DC in 2019. He has been an Executive Board member of the International Communications Association since 2013, and was President of the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA) in 2009-10.
He has been involved in research activities that have generated over $7million in research income. Grants include ARC Discovery projects on digital platform governance and the future of media policy, creative industries in China, and the rise of mistrust in news, as well as ARC Linkage projects on citizen journalism, web counselling for young people, social media and crisis communication, and creative industries in regional Australia.
