Biography

William Coaldrake is Project Professor in Cultural Resource Studies, the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, the University of Tokyo. Prior to this he was the Foundation Professor of Japanese at the University of Melbourne, Head of Japanese Studies, Melbourne Institute of Asian Languages and Societies (1992-2007). His research interests include Japanese architectural and urban history, Japanese art history, Japanese art and architectural conservation, Japanese history from Tokugawa to present, and Contemporary Australia-Japan political and cultural relations. In 2015 he was awarded Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) by the Queen.
