The Academy is governed by a Council of leaders in the humanities, elected from among our Fellows. Our Council provides strategic direction, policy guidance, and management oversight.


Professor Joy Damousi FASSA FAHA
Joy Damousi is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Melbourne. Joy was elected to Fellowship in 2004, taking up the role of President in November 2017. Elected to Council in 2016, she has been a member of the Academy’s Awards Committee since 2012, and served as Head of the Academy’s History Section (2008-11). Read more >

Elizabeth Minchin is Emeritus Professor, Classical Studies at the Australian National University. She was elected to the Academy in 2010 and is a member of the Classical Studies Section. Read more >

Professor Ian Lilley FSA FAHA
Ian Lilley is Professor in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) at the University of Queensland. He was elected to the Academy in 2011 and elected to Council in 2015. He is a member of the Academy’s Archaeology Section. Read More >

Emeritus Professor Richard Waterhouse FAHA
Richard Waterhouse is Emeritus Professor, School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry, University of Sydney, where he was Bicentennial Professor of Australian History until his retirement in 2011. He was elected to the Academy in 2005 and became a member of Council in 2011. Read more >
Emeritus Professor Graham Tulloch FAHA
Graham Tulloch was Professor of English and acting Head of the School of Humanities at Flinders University in Adelaide until his recent appointment as Emeritus Professor. He was elected to the Academy in 2002. He is a member of the Academy’s English Section, of which he was the Head from 2011–15. Read more >

John Fitzgerald is the Truby and Florence Williams Chair of Social Investment and Philanthropy at Swinburne University of Technology. He was elected to the Academy in 2000, was a member of Council from 2005–07, and International Secretary in 2006–07. Professor Bridget Griffen-Foley FAHA
Bridget Griffen-Foley is Professor of Media and an ARC Future Fellow at Macquarie University, where she was the the inaugural Director of the Centre for Media History. Professor Graham Oppy FAHA
Graham Oppy is Head of the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies at Monash University, and the Chair of Council of the Australian Association of Philosophy. He was elected to the Academy in 2009 and to Council in 2016. Professor Oppy is a member of the Academy’s Philosophy and History of Ideas Section. Emeritus Professor Graeme Turner FAHA
Graeme Turner is the founding Director of the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies (2000–12) at the University of Queensland. He was elected to the Academy in 1997, and was a member of Council from 2002–09.
