Rupert Myer to lead new advisory group for Australian arts and culture think tank

Renowned Australian arts philanthropist, Rupert Myer, will chair a new 10-member Reference Group to provide strategic advice for A New Approach, the independent think tank tasked with championing Australia’s investment and return in arts and culture.

The Reference Group will help guide the work of A New Approach, which aims to strengthen bipartisan, business and community support for arts and culture through a national research and advocacy program.

Announced today, the Reference Group draws on a broad range of expertise across culture, policy, research, technology and communications with the following members:

  • Rupert Myer AO (Chair)
  • Video game developer Kim Allom
  • Publisher and director of Australian Publishers Association and Copyright Agency Jane Curry
  • Chief Executive of the Grattan Institute John Daley
  • Musician and performing artist Genevieve Lacey
  • Executive Director of the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA Shelagh Magadza
  • Australian diplomat Damien Miller
  • Designer, festival director and film producer Alison Page
  • Political journalist Laura Tingle
  • Director of the National Museum of Australia Mathew Trinca

The Reference Group will provide strategic advice on A New Approach’s research agenda and public engagement initiatives. They are also a crucial part of the think tank’s work in building a cohort of champions for the importance of effective investment in a strong creative and cultural life for Australia.

The next meeting of the Reference Group for A New Approach will be held in May 2019.

It was established in 2018, seeded by a $1.65M commitment by The Myer Foundation, the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and the Keir Foundation.  The Australian Academy of the Humanities is the lead delivery partner for this initiative.
