The Academy extends its warm congratulations to Professor Sam Lieu FRAS FRHistS FSA FAHA on his election to the office of President of L’Union Académique Internationale (UAI) at the biannual meeting of the UAI General Assembly in Tokyo on 25 October 2017.

Established in 1919,  the UAI is the global organisation of national academies in the fields of the humanities and social sciences (HASS) in 61 countries. The UAI’s purpose is to create and encourage HASS international research projects and collaboration.

Professor Lieu’s election offers clear recognition of the esteem in which he is held by his international peers. His election is also a great honour for the Australian Academy of Humanities.

After Professor Stephen Wurm FASSA FAHA (UAI President 1986-1989 and President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities 1986-89), Professor Lieu is the second Australian to be elected to the UAI Presidency.

The Academy wishes Professor Lieu much success in his role, and looks forward to strengthening collaborations between the two organisations.
