Encouraging Scholarly Contact

In order to encourage scholarly contact with scholars from both Russia/the former USSR and Indonesia/South-East Asia, and to assist scholars from those countries obtain access to research materials held in Australia, the Australian Academy of the Humanities initiated the Visiting Scholar Programmes. Up to two scholars from the two regions (four in total), identified as being appropriate representatives at Australia-based conferences, may receive financial assistance each year. The aim of the program is to assist scholars in attending conferences and in gaining access to Australian research materials.

How it works

The Academy requires that the Australian host scholars deal directly with the foreign visitors in acquitting funds provided. The funds may be used for any form of assistance which the Australian host sees as vital to the visit such as international/domestic air or other travel costs, accommodation, conference fees, and daily allowances.

The Academy will forward the funds upon receipt of the Australian host scholar 's request. The funds must be used in full before the end of the current financial year. The Australian host will be responsible for providing the Academy with a summary of expenditure of the visiting scholar from Australia, as well as receipts to cover major expenditure (such as airfares) within two weeks of the departure of the visiting scholar from Australia.

In addition, a schedule of the visitor's itinerary and activities is required (such as conference attendance while in Australia, visits to appropriate university departments and scheduled lectures).

Amounts Available:
The amounts available depend on where the scholars come from. For Russia and the Former USSR, the amount provided to cover both scholars, is $7000 (two awards of $3500). For Indonesia and South-East Asia, the total amount for the two scholars is $4000 (two awards of $2000)

Reports:
The Academy also requires a report upon completion of the programme from the facilitator. If you are awarded a grant, and you send us a report, we'll post it here.

How to Apply:
To apply, the Australian host scholar will need to send to the Secretariat:

A brief explanation of the reason for the visit
A copy of the visiting scholars' curriculum vitae and a list of their most significant publications (in English).
A provisional itinerary listing speaking engagements, potential contact with Australian scholars, and research institutions to be visited.
A provisional budget for the expenditure of the funds.

Closing Date:
This programme is now closed for 2008. The closing date is 31 July each year. Applications received after this date will NOT be considered.
