Opportunities for international travel
The Academy takes very seriously its responsibilities regarding Australia's opportunities in the wider world. To this end, the Academy has, over the years, nurtured many relationships with overseas institutions. At the current time, these relationships have yielded several programmes that have been designed to enable Australian and foreign scholars to develop their own contacts overseas, foster strong relationships between Australian universities and foreign educational institutions, and allow Australian and foreign researchers access to materials not held in their home countries.
The Academy is involved in exchange agreements with sister organisations in the Netherlands and Sweden, whereby each Australian Academy sends one or two scholars a year to the exchange country, and we host one or two scholars from that country. The Visiting Scholar programmes assist scholars from Russia and the former USSR, as well as Indonesia and South-East Asia to attend conferences, deliver papers, and gain access to research materials in Australia. We also have a programme that helps fund joint projects between British and Australian scholars in conjunction with the British Academy and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA).
