Mayer is a world-renowned expert on the prolific and influential bishop and preacher John Chrysostom (ca. 347–407), and on the field of early Christian studies more broadly. Her publications are internationally acclaimed and she is credited with having reshaped the field, with landmark studies that led to redating key works of the important figure of Chrysostom, churchman of Antioch and Bishop of Constantinople. Dr Mayer is Research Fellow in the Centre for Early Christian Studies at Australian Catholic University and holds honorary positions as a Research Fellow in the Department of Biblical and Ancient Studies, University of South Africa and the Center for the Study of Early Christianity, Catholic University of America. In 2014 she was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at University of South Africa and in 2013 a Distinguished Visiting Researcher at Université d’Ottawa. She serves on the editorial boards of a number of international publications, including the series Writings from the Greco-Roman World and Journal of Early Christian Studies.
