Gillian Whitlock is a graduate of the University of Queensland and Queen's University in Canada, and is an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow at the University of Queensland. Her research field is life narrative – biographical and autobiographical writing across various historical and social contexts, with a particular interest on testimony. She was awarded a Centennnial Medal for services to Australian literary studies in 2001, and has published a series of monographs, edited books and articles on life writing and Australian literature and cultural studies. Her most recent book is Soft Weapons: Autobiography in Transit (2007).

Gillian is currently on the Board of the Australia India Council, a judge of Australia’s major literary award for fiction, the Miles Franklin Prize, and a member of the Academy Council.
