Dr Adams was educated at North Sydney Boys' High school (1956-60), Sydney University (1961-5), and Brasenose College, Oxford (1967-70). He was Rouse Research Fellow in Classics at Christ's College, Cambridge from 1970-1972, Professor of Latin at the University of Manchester from 1993-1995, Professor of Latin, University of Reading, 1995-1997 and is currently Senior Research Fellow, All Souls College, Oxford. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1992.
