Larry Sitsky studied piano from an early age and graduated from the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music in Sydney in 1955. He moved to Canberra in  1965 to take up the role of Head of Keyboard Studies at the Australian National University's School of Music. He was later appointed Head of Musicology, then served as Head of Composition Studies, Head of Academic Studies, Distinguished Visiting Fellow and is currently Emeritus Professor of the Australian National University.
Larry Sitsky has received numerous honours for his composition and research including the A H Maggs Award, the Alfred Hill Memorial Prize, the first National Critics' Award, a Fulbright Award, the inaugural Australian Composer's Fellowship presented by the Music Board of the Australia Council and a Centenary Medal. In 2015 he was presented with a Distinguished Service to Australian Music award.
